I've found a stocker that has quoted me an estimate of $180-$240, (my wood), to duplicate my stock. He says it's easier and cheaper if he does more than one at a time. Does anyone else want in on this?

That seems a bit high for duplicating your wood, let me check something tomorrow, and get back to you.

I've looked around quite a bit and can't find anyone cheaper that seems to know the correct answers when I ask questions. I've found a couple cheaper but they don't give me a warm fuzzy feeling when...

He told me that it would be easier and cheaper to do more than one at a time. My forearm is in real sad shape. I'm trying to build up the missing wood with accurglass. It's slow going but I'll get...

The wedge plates should have been pinned with brads. Did the guy doing the stock duplicating know the forestock has a clearing rod hole? Those alway get those guys excited.

I sent him the same photos. But even if he doesn't, I can make that. Should this rifle have a all metal wiping rod or a wood rod?

Wood rod. Short fore stock like you shouldn't have to much trouble drilling the hole. Usuallu it's drilled before the shaping is done and is reference point for the shaping operation.

The blueing is in pretty good shape so I'm going to do a sympathetic restoration not a complet one. The new metal will be aged to match. So will the stock.

After getting Casper's referral to his stocker, I sent off my 1871 W/R to the same fellow for analysis. He emailed on receipt of the rifle and will contact me when he has the list of repairs, etc....

Garret how many smiths do you think have two 1871's in their shop right now? I'd bet the number isn't very high.

I just purchased a model 1871 that is also in dire need on new wood. There are several places here in the states that do really fine work on these types of stocks. One man I know uses a new type of...
